Mahmud was born on this day in 1930 in Palembang, South Sumatra.

About the Doodle:

His interest in singing and dancing came at an early age, and he started formally studying music when he was 11. He attended the Jakarta Teacher’s Training Institute and, through a government scholarship, accepted a teaching job in Australia.

When he returned to Indonesia, Mahmud became a teacher at the School for Kindergarten Teachers and began writing songs for his students. They were easy to sing and remember, with clever rhymes and engaging melodies. He shared one particular jingle, Cicak di Dinding (Lizard on the Wall), with fellow teachers and it wasn’t long before kids across Jakarta were humming along.

Throughout his career, Mahmud wrote more than 500 different children’s songs including hits like Pelangi (Rainbow), Ambilkan Bulan (Take the Moon), and Anak Gembala (Shepherd Boy). He also hosted two musical television shows called Lagu Pilihanku (Song of My Choice) and Ayo Menyanyi (Let’s Sing) for 20 years.

Mahmud’s contributions to children’s music and education earned him the Artists Award from the Minister of Education and Culture, the AMI Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Bintang Budaya Parama Dharma Medal. He also wrote an autobiographical memoir titled A.T. Mahmud Meniti Pelangi: Sebuah Memoir in 2003.
