About the Indigenous Peoples Day 2026 Doodle
This Doodle honours National Indigenous Peoples Day 2026, a day to recognize the enduring presence, achievements, and vibrant cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Today’s artwork features geometric 3D beadwork sculptures created by Anishinaabe contemporary artist Nico Williams of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation. Each letter represents an unbroken, vibrant aspect of Indigenous culture:
G: Mishipezheu, or great lynx, of the north. This mythical, underwater creature is native to the Great Lakes, and believed to control the conditions of rivers, lakes, and currents.
O: The Anishinaabe Thunderbird, a legendary sky spirit that symbolizes power and protection. It has supernatural powers that can bring rains of renewal or thunderstrikes with a flap of its wings.
O: Nanibush. A prominent cultural hero and shapeshifting spirit in Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) mythology.
G: Ajijiak, or the crane. In Anishinaabemowin culture, this important clan symbol represents leadership, honesty, and community.
L: The opwaagan, or peace pipe. This sacred instrument was used to bind agreements in spiritual law during Anishinaabemowin ceremonies.
E: The jiimaan, or birch bark canoe. These carefully crafted canoes were used to navigate the maze-like networks of the Great Lakes, and treated with the utmost respect.
