About Mexico Independence Day 2025
This Doodle celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day. On this day in 1810, a priest rang the church bells in the town of Dolores, delivering a powerful speech known as the Grito de Dolores, or the "Cry of Dolores." This historic call to action urged Mexicans to rise against foreign rule. The fight for freedom lasted for over a decade, officially ending in 1821.
Mexicans celebrate their independence throughout the entire month, a period known as Mes Patrio (Month of the Homeland). Lively parades, street fairs, and fireworks displays fill the streets across the country. People dress in the national colors of green, white, and red, and wave the Mexican flag, like the one featured in the artwork. Traditional folk dances, mariachi music, and hand-embroidered clothing are all part of the celebration. Delicious traditional dishes are at the heart of the holiday including Chiles en Nogada (a poblano pepper stuffed with a stew of shredded pork or beef, all mixed with fruit) and pozole (spiced stew made with hominy and pork).
