About Respect for the Aged Day 2025
This Doodle celebrates Respect for the Aged Day, or Keiro no Hi (敬老の日), in Japan. On this day every year, Japanese citizens show gratitude and respect for the elderly. The holiday dates back to Old Folks’ Day or Toshiyori no Hi, a similar holiday from the Hyogo Prefecture. The idea to honor senior citizens gained popularity across the nation, and Keiro no Hi became an official national holiday in 1966.
On Respect for the Aged Day, families send letters or organize get-togethers to spend quality time with their related elderly. Many enjoy washoku (a cuisine that emphasizes traditional, naturally-sourced ingredients) meals while the elders share wise advice and stories from the past. Community leaders also visit those who turn 100 years old and award them with gifts to show appreciation for their guidance and contributions.
